Coke is probably my favorite soda, especially a fountain coke! Soooooo fizzy and good, but I haven’t had a soda since September 30, 2018. Since then, I have been shocked by my body’s response to no soda and more water. WOAH! It’s been really incredible. Before I tell you about what’s happened to me, let’s talk about the Last 90 Days Challenge?
Author, Rachel Hollis, issued this challenge and it includes what she calls “5 to Thrive”. Number four in 5 to Thrive is to give up a food group. Is soda a food group? It was for me! Haha. Coke (we call all soda coke) was a hard habit to break, but I made it through a family vacation and through the holidays without any! Rachel’s Last 90 Days Challenge, October through December of 2018, challenged me to keep this promise to myself, and I’m so glad I did!
Honestly, I really wanted the absence of coke to help me lose weight. I felt like this was a huge sacrifice, so I expected great results. They did come, but not how I ever expected. I was a little disappointed that I didn’t lose weight; however, my weight has stayed crazy consistent. Like hardly moving up and down at all, which is something I usually have a problem with especially during the holidays. The little tiny microscopic hand on the scale hasn’t fluctuated much since October. (I bought a cheap scale and the numbers are so small. Should have bought a digital one. Ha!)
Also, the less I drank cups full of sugar, the less sugar I craved. Which helped out that scale a lot I’m sure. It was tough. For the first couple of months, I wanted one SOOOO bad!!! I stayed strong, and now it doesn’t bother me as much. I’d rather just not drink one. The other two changes I’ve noticed are super personal, but I wanted to share because changing what you drink is EASY! Well, it’s hard, but doesn’t require lots of classes, effort, or money is what I mean.
I have irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Ewww. TMI I know, but hear me out. I’ve had two colonoscopies, taken medication, probiotics etc., and still had issues, but once I quit drinking soda my intestines have been nicer to me. YAY! Without going into too much detail, there’s a lot less air and fewer trips to public potties! My bloat is way down. Like I said, I haven’t lost any weight, but I can fit into a denim skirt I could barely button in September. I tried it on when I was Marie Kondo-ing the house, and it fit WITH room! Could.not.believe.IT! There’s still more too y’all!
Getting deep into the personal info now, I have PCOS and amenorrhea (absence of menstruation). I have amenorrhea unless I take hormones to make something happen. I have gone as long as two years without anything. Yikes. Bad I know, but I hate taking meds. UGHHH. So, here I am not drinking soda, and I have had TWO menstruations in the last 3 months!!!!!!!!! I cannot put enough exclamation marks because I can count how many I have had WITHOUT medication in the last decade on one hand. Lifechanging, just because I quit drinking soda.
So, here’s to no soda 2019. I ain’t going back. I seriously cannot believe the change ONE habit can have on your entire health. Soda is the only thing I changed. I didn’t change my diet or activity level, and I think that helped me really see what all the sugar was doing to my body. There are still things I can improve on, but I kept this one promise to myself and now I have somewhere to start building.
I would love to know if you took part in the Last 90 Days and how it changed your life. Thank you, Rachel Hollis, for challenging your tribe.
